What is worth stopping for in Sagres

Not an itinerary. These are the things people come back and mention, in no particular order — see two of them or all four.

  1. 1Lighthouse
  2. 2The most westerly point of the Iberian peninsula
  3. 3Sagres Fort
Worth knowing

Before you ride to Sagres

  • Cabo de São Vicente, six kilometres past the town, is the south-western corner of mainland Europe. Sailors called it the end of the world and meant it literally.
  • The lighthouse out there is one of the most powerful in Europe — its beam reaches far enough that it is the last thing ships see of the continent.
  • Inside the fortress is the Rosa dos Ventos, a wind rose over forty metres across laid into the ground. Nobody agrees on when it was made, which is more honest than a confident sign would be.
  • It is always windy here. That is not a bad day, it is Sagres — and it is why the surfers came in the first place.

The bike

One bike, and it does this ride

420 m of climbing over 33 km is nothing the motor cannot absorb. It is a hybrid with a motor on it — if the assist runs out you ride on, on seven gears.
