Worth knowing
Before you ride to Benagil
- The cave has no entrance on land. Every photograph you have seen was taken from a kayak, a paddleboard or a boat — there is no path down into it.
- The hole in the roof is a collapsed sinkhole, not a window anyone cut. Late morning is when the light comes through it and lands on the sand.
- How you are allowed to reach the cave has changed more than once, and swimming to it is the way people get into trouble. Book the kayak and let the operator tell you the rule that applies that morning.
- The beach itself is tiny — a strip between two cliffs. Come early or come late; at midday there is nowhere to put a towel.

The bike
One bike, and it does this ride
90 m of climbing over 6 km is nothing the motor cannot absorb. It is a hybrid with a motor on it — if the assist runs out you ride on, on seven gears.
